Build an email list - what exactly are the ways to make money from list building?

Today's topic is very specific and it deals with one of the top most questions internet marketers have when trying to build an email list.

"What exactly are the ways to make money off my email marketing list?"

Ah, that my friend will be answered here today. But first, if you haven't been around this site for long, I urge you to poke around and read the older content I've written on email marketing especially the one on the first step to do to build a list. You'll find tons of useful information here on list building and email marketing plus it's all free and it's, I dare say, much better then any $47 ebook you'll find out there.

Ok, so let's get on with it! The ways to making money from your own list!

List profit method #1
One of the best and most common ways to making money online is to sell them stuff! (duuh) Well, there's more to it then just 'selling stuff'. Allow me to explain further - there's 2 portions to it - selling other people's products and selling your own products.

One good place to source for products to promote to your list is at Clickbank.com. It is the premier digital marketplace and you can find niches ranging from the popular MMO niche to more obscure ones like preventing premature ejaculation...point is, not only are there tons of products to choose from, but you've got to be selective about what products you're promoting to your list too.

Remember I said earlier that you need (no, make that MUST) be seen as the trusted adviser or guide to your list? So you've got to make sure what you're promoting is good stuff too. The best way to ensure what you're promoting is 'good stuff' is to simply grab a copy by (a) emailing the website owner for one or (b) buying it yourself. Not only will you be able to review it then, you'll also be able to better craft your promotional email messages to your list! Also, you can use materials (not steal ok) there as basis for future content!

A win-win-win!

Normally what I do to promote products is to embed them in my content emails. So if I'm promoting product A,  I would usually Q up 5 emails. 3 or them content emails, 2 of them 'hard promos'. It would look something like this:

Email #1 - Content
Email #2 - Content
Email #3 - Content
Email #4 - Promo
Email #5 - Promo

In my content emails (#1-#3) I would be sending out related topical content. What do I mean by this? Say I'm promoting a product on Adwords marketing. In email 1 to 3, I wouldn't be sending out 'general' make money online stuff but I would send out email content on Adwords specifically.

(See what I'm driving at?)

In the content email, I would subtly hint at more - and refer to the course covertly once or twice. In emails #4 and #5 I would send out promotional emails for the products. Now you might be siting there wondering

"is it worth it going through so much trouble? Wouldn't it be better just sending out ONE promotion email blast?"

The answer: HELL YEA its worth it! By doing the sequence above, not only are you priming them to buy when you're actually promoting...for those that don't buy, you're still the 'cool guy' since you're giving them awesome free content as well! Although it does require more work, its a win-win scenario for you again!

Ok back to selecting your products. Ideally, you should look out for the top 5 (by 'gravity') products to sell in your niche. By virtue of its popularity you would know that it is the most likely to convert and also that the standard of the quality wouldn't be too poor.

There are many other digital marketplace out there like Commission Junction, JVzoo, Share A Sale etc but you should always start by looking at Clickbank first.

The next part of this first list profit method is to sell your own product. In fact, you should always always try to sell your own product even if your current business model is affiliate-dependent. Because with your own products you can always control your backend funnels - and that's where the real money is.

Here's an example:

$47 (front end) -> $97 OTO. (1st Funnel)
$127 High end course (2nd Funnel)
$3000 Coaching Program (3rd Funnel)
$15,000 Personal 1-1 Mentorship (4th Funnel)

See how much flexibility in up-selling (not to mention cross selling) you can have when you sell your own suite of related products and services?

So you see, making money from your list via 'selling products' is not as simple as it seems but if you do it right it can be extremely profitable. I'll return again with another post on the next way to make money from your list!
